What To Do After a Sexual Assault

  1. Go to a safe place.
  2. Call the police, or a friend or family member, someone you trust.
  3. DO NOT take a shower, bathe, douche, change clothes, or straighten up the area.
  4. Whether you report it or not, get medical attention for treatment of injuries and tests for pregnancy and STD’s.  A sexual assault examination kit, or “rape kit,” can also be performed during your exam.  Also, let it be noted that if a rape kit is performed it does not imply that you have to take further action in reporting the sexual assault to the police.
  5. Reporting is your choice.  If you do not report, try to write down the details of the assault and save them in case you change your mind.
  6. Take time to recover.  Do not blame yourself.  Get counseling.
