What To Do After a Sexual Assault
- Go to a safe place.
- Call the police, or a friend or family member, someone you trust.
- DO NOT take a shower, bathe, douche, change clothes, or straighten up the area.
- Whether you report it or not, get medical attention for treatment of injuries and tests for pregnancy and STD’s. A sexual assault examination kit, or “rape kit,” can also be performed during your exam. Also, let it be noted that if a rape kit is performed it does not imply that you have to take further action in reporting the sexual assault to the police.
- Reporting is your choice. If you do not report, try to write down the details of the assault and save them in case you change your mind.
- Take time to recover. Do not blame yourself. Get counseling.
